Cascade Waterfall, Millard County, Utah
We take a quick jaunt in the Tacoma to a west desert waterfall caused by the spring runoff. This was a short hike, under 1.5 miles and a rather short off-road trail to the trailhead.

Today's trail review takes us to the West Desert of Utah, inside the Great Basin area of the long departed Lake Bonneville. In the shadow of the southern half of the House Range, near Notch Peak, is Hell'n Moriah Canyon. A somewhat easy 20 mile route down into a sheer canyon valley, which makes this side-trail worthwhile. The trail is 20 miles long and offers good scenery, but in the spring tim...

Hey man, does it use a visco fan or electricfan or both of them ?
The BMW engined range rovers use a viscous fan for the primary cooling, there might be an electric one for the AC, I can’t remember.
@@ForgottenWaypoints thank you fyi 👌🏼
Your video helped me out a lot thank you sir🫡
Lexus guy, low range equals higher rpm’s.
Did I say it didn’t? We used it on this pass for gear reduction, no need to brake on the descents and you won’t bog down (ie: low rpm) on the climbs.
@@ForgottenWaypoints 2:55 in you said the V8 enjoys life at low rpm’s which was why you kept it in low. Maybe I misunderstood, no biggie. Does the GX also have that rock crawl mode, and do you use it? I find it too loud on my LX, but first gear low certainly slows me down on steep descents.
@@robertherrmann4823 , mine has no modes, it’s too old. Just 4lo, and it does great!
Bro took his dad with him 😊
As often as possible! He took me to Moab when I was 8 years old….he always has a spot in my rigs (but usually he’s in his own!)
Do you have to keep your motor running while you’re using it? If not, how long can you run it on your battery without drawing too much power out of your car that it won’t start?
We've never run it for an extended period with the vehicle off, so I couldn't say. It's a pretty high draw though. We always just plug it in while we are on the road heading towards our lunch spot. It takes about 30 minutes in our experience to reheat your food.
🔝✔️
Discovery 1❤
I think the Disco 1 will outlive the Disco 2 by nature of being more rugged, more simple, and cooler engine management
I drive mine 63-64 on the freeway. Same with my JK.
I’ve got 70,000km on my general grabber ATX tires. I live in eastern Canada and have had them on my 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor since I bought it in early July of that year. Rotated tires every oil change. It’s my daily driver to work, but I also haul 2 ATV’s on a 14 foot steel trailer, and take the truck back old woods roads for hunting and fishing. Winters here see more icy conditions than snow, however in deep snow the first two winters these tires were absolute beasts. I could go through anything. This past winter they felt less reliable, and I will need to replace them by the end of this summer. Durability- fantastic Quiet ride- fantastic Basic off road stuff- decent Snow- amazing Ice- not as “grippy” as I expected, and any time there was a threat of icy roads 4wd was always on. After reading that they’re one of the most durable, quiet, and capable in snow- I’ll be buying another set this winter that’ll last me another 3 years. 👍🏼
I love them still.
Nice to see Hammond finally hit that growth spurt.
Hahah. If only I was half as good and driving and reviewing as he is!
Great video! Do you think a 2 door stock JL Willys can get through this damage free :)?
Absolutely!! Obviously, skill plays a role, but the short wheelbase JL won’t be what trips you up! Sounds like an awesome ride!! There might be spots where you’ll want to take the bypass and/or use a spotter due to smaller tires. Be careful and you should be fine.
@@ForgottenWaypoints thank you! Really appreciate it!
just now finding this video, but makes me super excited to wheel moab again this summer! Got a group of slightly more built out cruisers so it'll be a blast - great video!
Let me know how it goes. I want to go again once I get my front locker (the rear has been great so far!)
Thanks very informative. A parts man in a very successful rover shop told me that the electric AC fan is also for when the engine overheats. Mine will not move, it’s rusty. I took it apart, it’s not fixable.
Maybe I should test mine, it’s been awhile.
For someone with no lockers or armor are there any easy trails to explore in Moab that would make the trip from San Diego worth it? I’m stationed in SD and being from the east coast I’ve always wanted to go to Moab. We have a LX470 with 285/70r17s on the way. We also have a 24’ Willy’s 4XE but i would be hard pressed fitting 3 kids (2 in car seats) and all of our stuff in a wrangler 😂
Absolutely!!! Rock sliders are really all you need for the really hard stuff, but trails like the potash road down shafer switchback would be a blast in a factory spec cruiser. Go to red rock 4wheelers website (rr4w.com) and look at trails rated 3 and under. You build could do 4s if you are experienced, but I’d want sliders.
Minivan driver was legit.
I’ve had mine since new in 1999. Now 470,000kms. The variable ride height suspension died so we changed to stiffer coils, torsion bars and Konis all round. It has a fixed 2” lift now. It’s a brilliant car, but fuel consumption is atrocious, giving a range of just over 600kms on its 140L tanks. In Australia that’s almost useless for outback touring. Fitting headers didn’t help but it now sounds awesome. Next step is Unichip.
Yeah, the gas mileage is an issue, even in the US. Not for range, but for cost per mile, especially with a roof rack!
Just bought a 2008 in pearl white. It was repainted under a lexus warranty for this color because it faded badly in the Miami sunshine. It has 140K miles and is comepletely rust free. I just replaced a leaking rack&pinion that was already replaced with a aftermarket part and changed all fluids. I have ordered Bilstein 5100 shocks the are ride height adjustable with slightly heavier front springs. Also ordered a rear OME rear spring conversion with a lift. Cant wait to install these parts myself and test.
Sounds like an awesome project!! Enjoy!
Everything's a compromise when it comes to rig selection. For a small family like ours w/ occasional off-roading, our Trailhawk is perfect, esp w/ larger 275/65 18 AT tires.
It’s true! My brother in law is looking into getting another wk2, and my cousin owns 2. They are a great all around rig for a vast majority of public trails! I’m glad you enjoy yours!
Common cause of failure is lack of maintenance by the owners. Bar none. I received for a gift a 2000 Disco 2. After I drove it awhile. I started noticing items. I'm a mechanic. I've been wrenching for 50 years. Anyway, I noticed the truck was never serviced. I spent a couple of months repair and replacing parts.
Thanks for sharing. Those were cool falls.
Sweet video! I'm ready to do some overlanding
We should get your ZR2 out and chase some waterfalls!
Seems like you are spending a lot of time in the Tacoma. Time to start a build?
@BackroadExploration , I think I’m keeping this one stock. All I have is e rated tires and sliders, keeping the lift off I still get 20mpg (20+ highway) and the factory suspension flies over easy trails. On anything that’s more technical or I need a heavier payload, the LX is a better tool.
I’m considering selling my JKUR for TJR.
You'd get a significantly more nimble and maneuverable platform!
Didn’t sell my JK. Bought my 04 Flame Red Rubicon back from the guy I sold it to 13 years ago. Only 73k miles on it.
@@Jake-pq3iz , sounds like an awesome find! Go on some fun adventures!
I had one. Speed limits haven’t changed. Drove it back and forth from Memphis.
Great video, man! Owned my Disco II since 2018, and its been way more reliable than I had any right to expect. Anyway, you covered all the bases, I think. And 100% on the T-stat. When I installed a REAL temp gage, I was shocked at how high the "normal" operating temp was. I was seeing 230 on the highway, and it would usually spike to 250F when I exit the highway for a fuel stop! No wonder these things have a rep for eating head gaskets! The only thing you brought up that I wasn't tracking was the "guibo" flex joint. Might have to toss one on, JIC.
Mine is starting to crack but I haven’t bothered with the job yet. Spare is in the rig.
Hello, good video.... What's the part number?
Great video! Good adventure! Do you recall approximately how many hours it took you from when you left pavement to reach the Natl. Park border?
Amazing vehicle
Nice videos!! What year is your LX, I am looking for one now
‘03. Thanks for watching! Last year it was tough to make vids, hopefully I can bring back the channel this year!
@@ForgottenWaypoints thank you looking forward to watch it, how much you spend on it to build it like that? How much you purchased it for and how many miles on it? Thank you! Fun car!!!
@@tz230 , Getting the rig that's in good shape these days is the hardest part. After that, you can pretty much just order lifts and wheels and rock sliders. (not to mention maintenance) You are probably into it $10k if you install it and do the maintenance yourself (which I did).
I love the laugh at the end! Nice work!
Size of v belt
Whatever Napa had in stock for my car
I bet you'll still be using that thing in 2070 when farm critters went extinct & you gotta eat tofu & insect protein
Hahah. As long as I have a 12V power source!
Hi, thanks for the great video! I have a question that the part I’m going to purchase says ABS tone ring is not included, do I need to buy a separate one or I can reuse the one on the old cv axle?
My CV didn’t have a new ring I just cleaned it.
Awful grill
Totally agree. I’m just too cheap to swap it yet. I should get on GX*OR and see if anyone has an OEM grills they are junking.
Amazing video man. Thank you.
Whats your tire/suspension set up?
OME heavy suspension w/ slee diff drop and ARB lower control arm reinforcements and 285/75R17 tires on Icon 17" wheels (no spacers)
@@ForgottenWaypoints 2inch lift? Do u have any rub at all?
@@damiansmith391, It's a 2.5" lift. The Icon wheels give me a good offset. I have to hammer the pinch weld to clear the 33.8s, and sometimes I get a minor rubbing at full lock on the passenger side. It's not rubbing on the body, but the plastic liner that you have to use a heat gun to push back after hammering the pinch weld. I must not have done a good job on that one. I need to pin it back, but I just deal with it. I believe with adjustable upper control arms I could eliminate it altogether, but it's not enough of an issue for me to spend the $$ on it.
@@ForgottenWaypoints so 2inch lift will not fit a 34-35inch tires without rub eh?
@smith391, not without cutting. Check out Tinkerer's Adventure video on Toyota IFS. While ours is a bit different with torsion bars, the fitting section still applies: ua-cam.com/video/_68Hc8GtLko/v-deo.htmlsi=ND3fG2JfBaBaG2Pc Quite honestly, you get better performance the LESS lift you have up front. I actually lowered the front of my LX by 1"+ compared to my earlier videos and I've been more impressed having additional droop than lift.
Those rear seats were definitely an afterthought.
Can’t believe how many ppl actually love these vehicles when they are complete an utter garbage compared to most other vehicles you can overland in…. I would never take anything other than a Toyota or Lexus 100s of miles on back roads from the nearest town an than 100s more miles from that country road taking back roads into the wilderness… Let alone trusting a Land Rover lol 4 Runner or GX470 everyday
When you say you used F6003 springs, is that the actual air bag part?
What was the total time going with ejs?
I’ll have to dig up the GPS track, I’m surprised I didn’t include it in the map sequence. Seems like I remember it finishing around 3.
This may be a dumb question but do you have to take the fan and fan clutch off to access? I don’t see yours
I had too, my hands aren’t small enough. You probably can access it though from underneath. You had to pull the fan for filming though.
@@ForgottenWaypoints I will give it a try from underneath maybe. I have very large hands though also
That isn’t a wireless phone charger, it’s a phone heater 😂
Hahah! You are absolutely correct! I quit using it because it charges so slow and heats up the battery. It can't be good for battery life! My sunglasses case live in there now, all my charging is done with the USB!
Great video series, it inspires me to do this trail in my LX. I haven't blown any CVs yet, but I did blow up the front diff on a tough climb with wheel hopping. Now locked front and rear so that's less of a worry. I'm curious, were all the rigs running the same tires? BFG KM3s? I was surprised how much more wheel spin the LX was getting vs the Jeeps, but I guess they were probably locked on most of the tough climbs.
Good eye! A few things going on here: 1) The JL had KM3s the JK and LX were on KO2s. I can't remember the pressures, but they were all similar. I started with a higher pressure as I wanted to see how the LX performed. Then forgot to drop it. After reviewing the footage, I clearly had room on the sidewall to drop pressure and it definitely would have helped. I'd probably run 18-20psi next time, depending on how much overland gear I'm carrying. 2) The Jeeps were locked front and rear, and this video crystal clearly shows why mechanical lockers are superior to electronic traction control in technical rock crawling terrain once you jump past the 5 rated trails. I've since added a rear locker to the LX and am dying to go back. 3) I'm a solid axle guy. The T-bars on the LX were cranked too high with too-much preload. I'm confident this caused some of the porposing too as I had no droop. I've since dropped the front of the LX by 1-1.5" and it's much better. 4) I've had a lot of comments that my driving "sucks". That's ok, but those familiar with the trail know I"m purposely outclassed and the video footage of the LX was indeed ugly. I've done the trail multiple times, including an unlocked ZJ grand Cherokee (shown in the golden crack section), so I know how it should "look". Which is one reason I'm itching to go back, even if I don't have the front locker yet. 5) The trail did prove the durability of the LX. I was pretty sure I'd snap a CV, or worse strip the front diff. Either were a possibility. I got lucky. Maybe when I go back, I won't be so lucky? Thanks for watching!! It was so much fun to make that short series.
@@ForgottenWaypoints Thanks for the thoughtful response. There will always be someone posting snarky comments. Usually someone who has never attempted something similar in a rig like yours. I wonder if the grippier compound on the KM3s also helped vs the KO2s? That said, I run KO2s and love them. I do go down to 15 psi offroad which has worked well for me. I just swapped out the AHC for an Ironman lift and I am worried about the T-bars being quite stiff. I know some folks just run the stock ones which I might do if the beefier Ironman ones end up being too stiff on the trails. I have yet to try them though.
@@etb4272 , you will definitely have better grip than me at 15psi. I can't speak for the KM3s, but my brother-in-law absolutely loves them. I think the performance is really close. Check out my Rose Garden Hill video for more comparisons of my dad's (JK, KO2) and my BIL (JL, KM3) in action. We were learning the JL at this time and didn't realize if you were in Drive in 4Lo it won't use 1st gear, so you aren't at max crawl ratio. My dad did know this on his JK, which in my opinion is the edge (gearing, not tires) in the difference in climbing up the hill. Both rigs did well, I would put the edge on KM3s, personally, but they are $$!
Crown King?
I should have bought the one at auction yesterday... SMDH
Yeah, they are stupid awesome, but they are also stupid maintenance intensive. Reliable, sure! but every 100k miles it's costs a bit to get it back up to snuff. So if you missed one on auction, just tell yourself it was a "money pit" and look for the next one!
You show '02-'09 4Runner width as 74" how arrive at that figure? The track is listed at 62" and my '03 4Runner measures just that, center of tread to center of tread across the front.
This was an earlier vid, using published width data. It should include the mirrors. Track width is a superior measurement and I should have led with that. Sorry.
During your research of the Mytoge Mountains did you find where the name "Mytoge" came from?
No, it’s the name of the mountain range too. I assumed it was Native American, but I’m not sure. I’ve received a book on the plateaus in the area, I’ll have a look and repost if I discover something
@ForgottenWaypoints In part 1 of my video about driving to the Twin Crater Lakes I asked if anyone knew where the name "Mytoge" came from. I received a comment that it mean "Moon". The commentor referenced a book titled "Utah Place Names" published in 1990. The origin was Native American but it was unknown which specfic group it was.
